It may be that your regular clinic doesn’t perform humane euthanasia, or you don’t have a regular clinic, or perhaps you are making the hard decision to consider humane behavioural euthanasia. The Community Veterinary Clinic offers compassionate end of life care for your pet. Our clinic includes a private space where you can be with your pet as you say goodbye, and a variety of options for aftercare.
End of Life Care FAQ
Yes. Appointments for humane euthanasia are available most Monday through Thursday afternoons and you can request an appointment through our web site. After you have booked an appointment, our team will reach out to ask you about your preferred aftercare options.
We will have your invoice ready for payment when you arrive. You and your pet will then be taken to a private room, and one of our veterinary team members will review the consent form before you sign. If you prefer, we can arrange for you to sign the form prior to your visit (this is encouraged if you feel that you will not be able to fully review the form prior to signing at your appointment).
When you are ready, your pet will be given a sedative by injection. During the time before the sedation takes effect, we encourage you to talk to your pet or feed them their favourite treats. Once they are fully unconscious, they will be given an injection that will put them to rest. It may be necessary to shave a small area of their fur to allow this injection to be made into a vein.
Options include private cremation (where the ashes are returned), communal cremation (where the ashes are spread with other pets’ remains), or taking the body home with you for burial or other private funeral or plans. Cremation options also include the option to purchase a paw print or other memorial items.
If you are purchasing a private or communal cremation, the remains will be held at our clinic until they are forwarded for cremation with an external service provider. All requested cremation fees must be paid at the time of euthanasia. If you are taking your pet’s remains home, they must be taken at the time of euthanasia. We are unable to hold remains unless cremation has been purchased.
In order to keep our costs as low as possible, we are unable to offer payment plans. If your pet is suffering and are unable to afford our fees we suggest that you reach out to the Humane Society or your local pound.
Our team of animal welfare professionals recognize that in some cases, a behavioural issue may mean that humane euthanasia is the most compassionate option. We recognize that these decisions are very difficult, and that you have likely agonized over them. When humane euthanasia is the appropriate choice, we will help to make the process as comfortable as possible for you and your pet.
We are able to keep our prices low because we are a high volume clinic. While many clinics do only a few surgeries a day and spend much of their time on wellness visits, emergencies, and critical care, we primarily offer spay and neuter services. This high volume is used by many spay/neuter clinics to achieve cost savings.
Our clinic is also non-profit, with a goal of operating on a break-even basis. The clinic’s model is self-sustaining, and is self-funding through fees charged for surgeries, supported as well by generous donors who assist our efforts.
Aftercare Options
Communal Cremation
Communal cremation provides a respectful way to handle your pet’s remains. Gateway Pet Memorial offers communal cremation where a pet is cremated with other animals, and their remains are not returned to the owner. A portion of the cremated remains from each communal cremation is interred in a communal burial plot at a Sandy Ridge Pet Cemetery, while the remainder of the ashes are buried. You may choose to order keepsakes such as paw prints or fur clippings at the time of communal cremation.

Bringing Your Pet’s Remains Home
We offer Euthabags for people who are bringing their pet home. “An alternative to bringing your pet’s remains home in a blanket or towel, the Euthabag is ecological, respectful, and leak-proof and can be customized with permanent markers or paint.” This option is $20, and is in addition to the euthanasia fee.
You are also welcome to bring your own blanket, towel, box, or other alternative to bring your pets remains home. There is no additional charge for this option.
Private Cremation – $250
Private cremation provides you with the opportunity to keep your pet’s cremated remains as a permanent and personal keepsake. When you choose private cremation, your pet will be the only pet in the cremation chamber. When the cremation process is complete, Gateway Pet Memorial ensures that you receive only the cremated remains of your pet, and will return your pet’s remains in a complementary scatter tube along with a certificate of cremation. Private cremation is available for any pet for $250.
Note: This fee includes a scatter tube containing your pet’s remains, not an urn. A variety of urns are available for an additional cost. Cremation fees are in addition to the cost of euthanasia.
Memorial Keepsake Options
All memorial keepsake prices are in addition to the $250 private cremation fee (aside from the included scatter tube).
